Sweet Escape Cake Company

We are the value pick and the south side’s cupcake case. • Honest note: You pay for the fame. At roughly $5 to $6 per jumbo cupcake in packs, it is the priciest dozen in town, and its 4.4 Google rating trails Sweet Escape and Smallcakes, both at 4.7.

Smallcakes Cupcakery & Creamery

Smallcakes is the franchise of the group, and that is not an insult: signature flavors are baked fresh every morning, the price list is refreshingly public, and the “Creamery” half means in-house ice cream alongside the cupcakes. Three area locations cover Broad Ripple, North Indy, and Greenwood.

• Best for: Mini-cupcake trays for parties, cupcakes plus ice cream in one stop, and north-side or Greenwood convenience.
• Known for: A dozen signature flavors baked daily, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan, and sugar-free options, and $2 pupcakes for the dog.
• Published prices: Dozen minis $24, dozen mediums $40, dozen jumbo $48, half-dozen jumbo $25.50, gluten-free and dairy-free half-dozen $30.
• How to order: Walk in or order pickup online. The Broad Ripple shop opens at noon.
• Honest note: Flavors follow the national Smallcakes playbook, so it is less a homegrown Indy bakery and more a well-run franchise. Its North Indy shop sits in the old Gigi’s Cupcakes space.

The Hive Bakeshop

The Hive Bakeshop currently holds the #1 spot for cupcakes in Indianapolis on Yelp, and the reviews read like fan mail. It is a made-to-order shop in the SoBro area, which means the cupcakes are baked for your order rather than pulled from a case.

• Best for: Custom celebration dozens where taste and decoration both matter, ordered a few days ahead.
• Known for: Filled cupcakes, custom celebration cakes, and gluten-free cupcakes that reviewers single out.
• Published prices: Standard cupcakes run 6 for $25 unfilled or $30 filled, a dozen for $35 or $45 filled, up to 30 for $55 or $65.
• How to order: Through the online order form on its website. There is no retail counter.
• Honest note: No storefront case means no impulse cupcake. If you need something today, this is not your shop, and the price list on its site is posted as an image, which makes it easy to miss details.

Confectioneiress Cupcakes & Sweets

Confectioneiress is the newcomer to watch. The Zionsville original built its reputation on cupcakes, macarons, and cake pops treated like small art pieces, and in 2026 it opened a second shop at 755 Massachusetts Ave downtown. The new location is already showing a perfect 5.0 on Google, though from a small early review count.

• Best for: Downtown evenings. It is open until 8 PM Tuesday through Sunday, hours no other shop on this list keeps.
• Known for: Cupcakes, French macarons, cream pies, and cookie dough shooters in a modern sit-in space.
• Published prices: Not published. Orders go by phone or email, and singles are available walk-in.
• How to order: Walk in at Mass Ave or Zionsville, or call or email for custom orders. The shop asks that you not order through social media DMs.
• Honest note: No published pricing and a short track record at the new location. The early reviews are glowing, but the sample is small.

Vanilla Bean Bakery

Vanilla Bean Bakery is a custom shop on West 86th Street that shows up on nearly every local cupcake list, including Yelp’s top four. It is a true special-order bakery: you pick the design, they bake to it.

Taylor’s Bakery

Taylor’s Bakery has been feeding Indianapolis since 1913, which makes it Indiana’s oldest bakery and the nostalgia pick of this list. Cupcakes here are the classic American bakery kind: iced, ring-decorated, and priced like it is still a treat rather than a luxury.

• Best for: Old-school bakery cupcakes at the lowest single-cupcake price on this list, plus a box of its famous butter cookies while you are there.
• Known for: More than a century of scratch baking at its Allisonville Road and Fishers locations.
• Published prices: Chocolate or white cupcakes $2.75 each, red velvet with cream cheese icing $3.25.
• How to order: Walk in Tuesday through Saturday or order pickup online. Note that its main .com website has been unreliable; the Square ordering site is the live one.
• Honest note: Cupcakes are a side item at a full-line bakery, not the specialty. It is closed Sundays and Mondays, and the bakery changed hands in 2023 after four generations of family ownership.

What happened to Gigi’s Cupcakes in Indianapolis?

Gigi’s Cupcakes, once the city’s other big cupcake name, has closed both its Indianapolis shop on Union Chapel Road and its original Fishers location. The national brand now focuses on shipping cupcakes rather than running local storefronts, and Smallcakes bakes in the old North Indy space today.

A couple of other familiar names are missing from this list on purpose. The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolyn Rogers is TripAdvisor’s top Indianapolis result for cupcakes, but its online bakery menu does not actually carry a cupcake category; it is a destination restaurant for layer cakes and afternoon tea, and a wonderful one. Circle City Sweets, now at the AMP at 16 Tech, says it best on its own homepage: there is more to pastry than cupcakes. Go for croissants and macarons, not a birthday dozen. And if you are south of the city, home-based Sugar Bliss Cakery in the Greenwood and Franklin area takes custom cupcake orders online from $20 per dozen.
