How to Save Money on Your Wedding Cake (Without It Showing)

By Amy McCorkle Updated Jul 11, 2026

Here is the honest answer from a bakery: the money in a wedding cake is in the decorating labor, not the cake. So save where nobody looks. Pair a small display cake with kitchen cakes at $3.50 per serving, pick buttercream over fondant, use fresh flowers, and skip dummy tiers. Most “cheap wedding cake alternatives” quietly cost more per guest than cake does.

Wedding budgets are under real pressure. 84% of couples believe a wedding costs more than it did two years ago, and 60% say the gap between inspiration and budget is their biggest planning headache (Zola, 2026). The cake is one of the few places you can pull real money back without anyone noticing, if you cut in the right places. We bake wedding cakes on Indianapolis’s south side every week, our pricing is public, and these are the ten levers we walk couples through at the tasting table. New to the whole process? Start with our complete Indianapolis wedding cake guide.

How much does a wedding cake cost in the first place?

American couples spent an average of $540 on their wedding cake in 2025, and most quotes land between $3 and $8 per slice (The Knot, 2026). At Sweet Escape Cake Company, buttercream wedding cakes are $7.00 per serving: a three-tier that serves 74 starts at $518, and a four-tier that serves 130 starts at $910.

Zola puts the typical range higher, at $700 to $1,100 (Zola, 2026), and couples on Reddit trade quotes to sanity-check each other. “I heard that wedding cake prices were absurd” is a real post from a real bride, and the instinct behind it is fair. The fix is knowing what you are paying for. A wedding cake is mostly skilled labor: baking, filling, stacking, and above all decorating, hour after hour of it. Ingredients are the small line. That one fact explains every tip in this guide, and it is why the tricks that cut decoration save real money while the tricks that hide cake do not. For the local number-by-number breakdown, see how much a wedding cake costs in Indianapolis.

Do dummy tiers make a wedding cake cheaper?

No. A dummy tier is a styrofoam form iced and decorated to match the real tiers. Since decorating labor is most of a wedding cake’s price, a fake tier costs nearly as much as a real one, and nobody can eat it. It is the most repeated budget tip on the internet, and it does not work.

Type a budget-cake question into Google and the AI answer will cheerfully suggest “faux tiers,” citing photography blogs. Bakers see it differently. According to Amy McCorkle, owner of Sweet Escape Cake Company, the myth gets the economics exactly backwards. “A dummy tier still gets iced and decorated to match the rest of the cake, so you are paying for the decorator’s hours either way,” she says. “You just cannot eat the result. Kitchen cakes flip that trade: all cake, no decorating bill.”

The dummy tier is, in our opinion, the worst deal in wedding cake. If you want height for the photos, a taller display cake with kitchen cakes behind it gets you there for less, and every slice is real.

10 ways to save money on your wedding cake

Every strategy below uses Sweet Escape’s published pricing, so you can check the math yourself. Savings estimates use a 125-guest wedding as the yardstick.

1. Serve kitchen cakes behind a small display cake

This is the biggest lever, and it is the one trick the whole internet agrees on without ever doing the math. A kitchen cake is a plain sheet cake in the same recipe and the same house-made buttercream as your display cake, sliced in the back and plated for guests. Decorated tiers are $7.00 per serving; kitchen cakes are $3.50. For 125 guests, a two-tier display cake (36 servings, from $252) plus 89 kitchen-cake servings comes to about $564 instead of $875. That is roughly $312 back. We wrote a full guide to how kitchen cakes work, with the savings table at every guest count.

2. Choose buttercream over fondant

Fondant is a rolled sugar sheet that takes extra time to apply, and you pay for that time. At Sweet Escape, fondant runs about $7.50 per serving against $7.00 for buttercream, and nationally the gap is often $1 to $2 per slice (Thumbtack, 2025). On 125 servings, buttercream keeps $63 or more in your pocket. It also happens to be where cake design is heading: textured, organic buttercream finishes are all over 2026 weddings, and our house-made buttercream is the thing our reviews rave about. Weigh the look and feel of both in fondant vs. buttercream.

3. Use fresh flowers instead of sugar flowers

Handmade sugar flowers are gorgeous, and they are priced like the individual works of art they are, built petal by petal over hours. Fresh flowers do the same visual job for a fraction of the cost, because a few stems can ride along on the florist order you are already paying for. The Knot lists fresh-over-sugar as one of its top cake savings moves (The Knot, 2026). Bring us a handful of blooms from your florist and we will place them food-safe when we deliver and set up the cake.

4. Order for the guests who will actually eat cake

Not every guest eats cake. Most couples can order for 80 to 85 percent of the headcount and never run short, especially with a late-night snack or a second dessert in the mix. At $7.00 per serving, every ten servings you do not order is $70 back. And to the Reddit fear that “guests don’t eat the cake”: if the cake is good, guests eat it. Brides in those same threads report theirs was “nearly completely gone.” Square tiers help too, since a square three-tier serves 100 at the same per-serving price where a round three-tier serves 74. Our wedding cake size chart maps tiers to servings so you can order to your real list.

5. Keep the design simple and let one detail shine

Since labor is the price, design complexity is the invoice. A smooth or combed buttercream finish with one statement element, a cascade of fresh blooms, a bold ribbon of color, a great topper, photographs beautifully and stays close to base price. This is also just where weddings are in 2026: single-tier statement cakes and clean, textured finishes are trending, not maximalist sugar architecture. Simple is a style, not a compromise.

6. Stay inside the signature flavors and fillings

At many bakeries the flavor list is a second price list, with premium flavors and fillings adding per-serving upcharges that quietly grow the quote. Sweet Escape includes all 19 cake flavors and 9 fillings at base price, including the fan favorite, Butter Pecan with Creamy Caramel. You can even split flavors by tier or by kitchen cake at the same price. That is savings you get by never being charged in the first place.

7. Swap in a cupcake tower with a small cutting cake

Custom cupcakes are $42 per dozen, which is $3.50 per guest, the same math as kitchen cakes, with a built-in display moment. Add a small cutting cake on top for the photos and the cake-cutting, and dessert for 125 guests lands near half the price of fully decorated tiers. Cupcakes also skip the venue’s cake-cutting fee, because there is nothing to slice.

8. Add a small dessert-table supplement, not a full dessert bar

Shrink the cake, then fill the gap with lower-cost formats: cake bites at $18 per dozen, which is $1.50 a piece, cake pops at $48 per dozen, decorated cookies at $60 per dozen, macarons. A modest cake plus a small sweets table reads generous and costs less per guest than decorated tiers. The trap is scale. A full dessert bar with six stations is not a budget move, which brings us to the next section.

9. Book five to nine months out

Late booking costs money in quiet ways: rush fees at many bakeries, fewer open dates, and pressure to say yes to whatever is still available. Our wedding calendar books out more than 95% of the time, and peak Indianapolis months (May, June, October) go first. Book 5 to 9 months ahead, 9 to 12 for peak dates, and a $150 deposit holds yours, with the balance not due until a month before the wedding. Here is when to order your wedding cake, month by month.

10. Put the $30 tasting fee to work

Our tasting is $30 for up to three people: 50 minutes, three flavors, three fillings, in the tasting room couples call “adorable” in their reviews. Book a $500+ wedding cake the same day and the $30 comes off your order, which makes the tasting free. Amy’s advice for that appointment is blunt in the friendliest way. “Bring us your real number,” she says. “We would much rather build you the best $600 cake in Indianapolis than pretend the budget is not sitting at the table with us.” Book a tasting and bring your number.

Are cheap wedding cake alternatives actually cheaper?

Usually not. Dessert buffets typically price between $7 and $20 per person once variety and labor are counted, while kitchen cakes are $3.50 per serving and cupcakes work out to $3.50 per guest. The alternatives that save money are the ones that cut decorating labor, not the ones that replace cake with six other desserts.

Here is the per-guest math at Sweet Escape’s published prices:

Dessert formatPriceWorks out to (per guest)
Decorated buttercream tier$7.00 per serving$7.00
Kitchen cake (same recipe, served from the back)$3.50 per serving$3.50
Custom cupcakes$42 per dozen$3.50
Cake pops$48 per dozen$4.00
Decorated cookies$60 per dozen$5.00
Cake bites$18 per dozen$1.50

One bakery that builds wedding dessert buffets full-time prices them at $7 to $20 per person and says plainly they are not the cheap option. Couples are learning this the expensive way. “We were being quoted +4k for a dessert bar for 350 guests!” one bride wrote on r/weddingplanning. Another: “I can’t fathom spending more on desserts than my wedding dress.” Zola’s survey data shows couples now split roughly half-and-half between traditional cake and alternative desserts (Zola, 2025), but plenty of the couples coming back to cake are the ones who actually priced the alternatives.

What about the grocery-store route? Honest answer: for a 30-person backyard wedding, a grocery sheet cake can be a fine call, and we say so in our custom vs. grocery store cake comparison. For a full reception, the gaps show fast: no delivery and setup, no stacked structure, limited flavors, and someone you love assembling dessert on the morning of the wedding. At $3.50 per kitchen-cake serving, the price difference is smaller than most couples expect. For a deeper side-by-side of every format, see our cake vs. dessert table cost comparison.

What does the savings stack look like at a real wedding?

Take a 125-guest wedding at a Center Grove venue. The couple orders a two-tier display cake in White with Strawberry Mousse, 36 servings from $252, dressed with fresh blooms from their florist. Behind it: 70 kitchen-cake servings of Butter Pecan with Creamy Caramel for $245. That is 106 servings for 125 guests, right in the 85% zone. Cake total: $497, plus $60 for Friday delivery and setup. The all-decorated version of the same guest count runs $875 before delivery. They kept about $378, and if they serve the top tier instead of freezing it, our free 6-inch anniversary cake shows up on year one.

“The creamy caramel filling is to die for. Also the prices are affordable.” (Ruthie M., The Knot review, 2025)

That is the whole philosophy: transparent prices, and savings that come out of the labor nobody sees, never out of the slice your guests taste. Fair warning, though. If your vision is five fondant tiers with hand-piped lace on every inch, no list of tips gets that cake to $500, and we would rather say so at the tasting than surprise you in a quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest way to have a wedding cake?

Pair a small decorated display cake with kitchen cakes, plain sheet cakes in the same recipe served from the back. At Sweet Escape Cake Company in Indianapolis, decorated tiers are $7.00 per serving and kitchen cakes are $3.50, so a 100-guest wedding drops from about $700 to about $476 with no visible change on the cake table.

How much should a wedding cake cost for 100 guests?

Nationally, couples average about $540 for a wedding cake, with most quotes between $3 and $8 per slice. In Indianapolis, Sweet Escape prices buttercream at $7.00 per serving, so 100 fully decorated servings run about $700. Pairing a small display cake with kitchen cakes brings the same 100 servings down to about $476.

Is buttercream or fondant cheaper?

Buttercream. At Sweet Escape, buttercream wedding cakes are $7.00 per serving and fondant runs about $7.50, so buttercream saves roughly $0.50 per serving, about $63 on a 125-guest cake. Nationally the gap is often $1 to $2 per slice, because fondant takes more time to apply. Most 2026 design trends favor buttercream texture anyway.

Do fake cake tiers (dummy tiers) save money?

Not really. A dummy tier is a foam form that still has to be iced and decorated to match the real tiers, and decorating labor is where most of a wedding cake's cost lives. You pay close to real-tier prices for cake nobody can eat. Kitchen cakes save money the honest way: real cake, no decorating cost.

Are cupcakes cheaper than a wedding cake?

Usually, yes. Sweet Escape's custom cupcakes are $42 per dozen, which works out to $3.50 per guest versus $7.00 per decorated cake serving. Add a small cutting cake for the photos and the cake-cutting moment, and a cupcake tower feeds 125 guests for roughly half the price of fully decorated tiers.

Is a dessert bar cheaper than a wedding cake?

Often it is not. Dessert buffets commonly price between $7 and $20 per person once you count the variety and labor, while a kitchen-cake setup costs $3.50 to $7.00 per serving. Some couples get dessert-bar quotes higher than their entire cake budget. A small dessert-table add-on next to a modest cake is the value sweet spot.

What hidden fees should I watch for on a wedding cake?

Ask about delivery and setup, cake-cutting fees, and rush charges. Sweet Escape publishes delivery pricing up front, $60 to $95 for most Friday and Saturday central Indiana deliveries on orders of $350 or more. Cutting fees usually come from venues, not bakeries, often $1 to $3 per slice, so read your venue contract too.
